(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – Madeline “Kay” Harris has been hard at work about 20 feet in the air for a month, delicately applying paint to the exterior of a downtown Lawrenceburg building.

Those who walk or drive by 29 East High Street are now seeing the result of the local artists’ many hours of painting. A 25-feet-high by 40-feet-wide mural is nearing completion on the exterior wall of the two-story building.

Harris’ mural depicts an 1860’s scene of the Ohio River in southeastern Indiana. There’s a riverboat chugging by, a man waiting to send a letter back home, a woman saying her goodbyes, and a horse-drawn wagon carrying whiskey barrels.

“I love being around here. I love the river. This is just a snapshot of a day in the life back then,” says Harris.

If you take a few minutes to admire the mural up close, you’ll notice a squirrel hiding in the bushes, a turtle sunbathing on a piece of driftwood and the shadow of the hawk flying in the sky above.

The mural is being commissioned by building owner Linda Schneider. The big painting is something she has been hoping to add for a long time.

Linda bought the building in 2005. The following February, the building next door was destroyed by a fire and led to damage in her building. She’s finally gotten to the point where she could give Harris the green light on the mural.

“I hope people will see this building is a piece of Lawrenceburg’s history,” says Schneider.
