MLK Day Of Service In Tri-State

"Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

(Cincinnati, Oh.) - Tri-State residents will join the rest of the nation in honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King Junior Monday.

Events are scheduled around the themes of education, service and remembrance at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the Cincinnati Museum Center.

The MLK Coalition of Cincinnati will hold a Commemorative Civil Rights March  starting at the Freedom Center at 10:30 a.m. It will progress to Fountain Square, then to Cincinnati Music Hall for a MLK Commemorative Celebration.

Government offices, post offices and banks are closed in observance of the holiday.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is asking Hoosiers to help honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. by volunteering to serve at one of Indiana’s state parks this year. There are many roles in which people’s talent is needed, from maintaining trails to entering computer data to helping in the nature centers.

"Volunteering gives you a great sense of accomplishment,” said Jody Heaston, volunteer coordinator for Indiana State Parks. “You know you are helping manage and conserve our natural and cultural resources for future generations to enjoy.”

For more information, visit stateparks.IN.gov/2443.htm. Download an application and return it to the state park or lake where you want to volunteer.

On Friday, the Ohio County Historical Society commemorated a new historical marker in Rising Sun. It recognizes the contributions of the Barkshire family to the Underground Railroad. Watch our video about the marker at "Rising Sun Was A Stop On The Underground Railroad".
