(Milan, Ind.) – A new state historical marker will commemorate the 1954 Milan Indians state championship team.

A public dedication ceremony will take place on Saturday, March 26.

The program will begin at noon at 201 W. Carr Street in Milan, across from the Milan ’54 Hoosiers Museum.

The museum will be open free of charge and will be the host site of a reception following the unveiling of the new marker that will read “Milan Miracle”.

State historical markers commemorate significant individuals, organizations, places, and events in Indiana history.

Milan High School winning the 1954 boys basketball state championship is regarded as one of the top sports moments in Indiana history.

Led by Bobby Plump, the Indians defeated then four-time state champion Muncie Central, a school 10 times its size, 32-30 in the state title game. The historic moment inspired the 1986 movie Hoosiers.

For over 100 years, the Indiana Historical Bureau has been marking Indiana history. Over 700 historical markers have been installed since 1946.

The public is invited to attend the dedication on March 26. The historical marker will be the 10th installed in Ripley County.
