(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Thanks to a recent arrest, more than 10 grams of methamphetamine are off the streets.

Andrew J. Shelton, 24, of Aurora, was arrested on August 14 and charged with Dealing in Methamphetamine at Least 10 Grams (Level 2 felony) and Possession of Paraphernalia (Class A misdemeanor).

Shelton was pulled over by Lawreneceburg Police after he disregarded a stop sign on Front Street near West Center Street.

While checking Shelton's driving status, police observed in the local database that Shelton had prior drug involvement. Shelton was then asked if he would consent to a search of his vehicle. According to a probable cause affidavit, Shelton said "yes, then no, then said yes again."

Before a search of the vehicle began, police say two plastic baggies containing approximately 10.8 grams of methamphetamine fell to the ground from Shelton's shorts. Police say they also found two digital scales, three cell phones and a piece of foil with burnt residue in Shelton's vehicle.

Shelton was taken into custody and transported to the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center.

On August 16, Shelton pleaded not guilty during his initial hearing in Dearborn County Circuit Court.

If convicted, Shelton could face an enhanced sentence due to habitual offender status for at least three prior unrelated felony convictions. Between August 2013 and June 2018, Shelton was convicted of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Escape and Possession of a Syringe.

Shelton is currently held in Dearborn County Jail on $200,000 surety bond, in addition to cash bond in the amount of $10,000.
