(Napoleon, Ind.) – The Napoleon Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the loss of a longtime member.
Ralph Meyer suffered a fatal heart attack on Wednesday, just hours after serving at a structure fire.
Meyer, 72, had served as a firefighter for 58 years. He started when he was 14 years old.
The Meyer family have dedicated their lives to public service. Ralph once served as Fire Chief, a position now held by his son, Steven. His father served on the board and later the department for approximately 50 years. His granddaughter and grandson now serve as well. His brother is the Assistant Chief.
In his final act of service, Meyer’s organs were donated and it is estimated that his donations will help between 100 and 150 people.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
