Local Retired Teachers Win Statewide Awards

(Dearborn County, Ind.) - Volunteerism among Dearborn County retired teachers took center stage at the 58th annual Representative Assembly of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association (IRTA) in Indianapolis on June 7.

Long-time Sunman-Dearborn School Corporation teacher Jim Pierce received the Association Member Benefits Advisors Award in Area 10 for his outstanding service, receiving the Volunteer Clock Award. As well, Etta Boswick, Marlene Dozier, and Janet Hart were honored for their continued volunteerism. The Dearborn County Retired Teachers Association (DCRTA) also completed the most total volunteer hours in the state with 32,642 hours.

Dearborn County also received Outstanding Awards for its public relations, communication, and website work.

Twelve members attended the gathering, which annually sets priorities and goals for retired teachers’ work and presents awards for outstanding service. In attendance were Etta Boswick, Betty Bourquein, Mark Guard, Pat Harper, Janet Hart, Peg Loots, Sharon, Judy Mosier, Cathy Mund, Jim Pierce, Jascia Robinson, and Jo Sloan. Also at the Assembly, former Ripley, Ohio, and Dearborn County Special Education (ROD) director Cheryl Corning was installed as the new Area 10 director.

Dearborn County Retired Teachers Association (DCRTA) members annually participate in many volunteer programs from Read Across America to the Sewing Project to supporting classroom teachers with educational projects. They also advocate with the Indiana legislature in support of pro-education causes.

The DCRTA is an affiliate chapter of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. All local retired teachers are welcome to join. Contact President is Judy Mosier at kjmosier@comcast.net.
