Lightning Strikes Start Six House Fires In Hebron

Wednesday evening's storms did some damage in Eagle Country.

(Hebron, Ky.) - Lightning strikes are believed to be the cause of six home fires in Hebron Wednesday evening.

Storms that rolled through the tri-state packed a lot of lightning and a deluge of rain.

Starting around 5:30 p.m., the Hebron Fire Department got its first call about lightning striking a house on Sequoia Drive. Within minutes, five more calls came in about lightning hitting homes.

The most serious fire occurred at a home on Whispering Pines Drive. The roof of that home was destroyed.

“They are all lightning strikes,” said Hebron Fire Chief Tony Scheben said on Whispering Pines. “On three of them we had to pull lines. This was our worst call. The other two were lightning strikes up in the attic, but we were able to catch them very quickly. This one got ahead of us. Don’t know how long it was burning before we got the phone call.”

No residents or firefighters were injured in the fires. The Hebron Fire Department received assistance from firefighters from Burlington, Florence, and elsewhere.

The heavy rains also caused problems in western Hamilton County. Flash flooding shut down several roads and flooded some homes and businesses, particularly in Cleves. A number of trees were also blown down by the storm.

The possibility of thunderstorms remains in the forecast again Thursday, when the high temperature reaches about 86 degrees. Rain and storms will persist through the weekend.
