(Guilford, Ind.) – When Tanners Creek rises, it makes a mess at the Guilford Covered Bridge Park.

The creek flooded in February, swallowing a large portion of the Dearborn County park at State Road 1 and Main Street in Guilford. Normally picturesque, the park has been left with mud and debris by the flood.

Miller-York Fire Department president Greggory Callahan says the annual park clean-up day is Saturday, March 23 beginning at 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Anybody willing to volunteer is welcome to come and help. Bring your own rakes, shovels, and gloves. Callahan says any farm equipment which might make corn stalk clean-up easy would be helpful.

A light lunch will be provided to volunteers.

If you or your group can help clean the Guilford Covered Bridge Park, please email park steward Terry Stephens at tstephensww@aol.com in advance so that there can be an estimation of the amount of help coming.

According to Dearborn County Parks Department, “The oldest park in the system is unique for a number of reasons, Guilford Covered Bridge Park is the site of the restored Guilford Covered Bridge, a major county landmark and frequent roadside tourist attraction, as well as an excellent family gathering area with access to Tanners Creek.”

“Cars are permitted to drive through the wrought iron gates, across the bridge and park in the lower lot. A small shelter house, basketball court, play equipment and bathroom are located in the central open space. The park is a popular picnic spot and has been the site for many family reunions and even weddings.”
