The new lanes should help improve traffic flow on Interstate 71/75.

(Boone County, Ky.) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 Office announced Friday that they will be adding two new merging lanes along the I-71/75 in Boone County.

In June 2018, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $67.5 million grant to the KYTC as part of their Infrastructure for Rebuilding America.

The new lanes will be added in each direction between Mt. Zion Road (Exit 178) and US 42 (Exit 108). Extending two miles, the lanes will help improve traffic flow on I-71/75 making it easier and safer to enter and exit the interstate, allowing divers to have more time to merge into traffic.

Along with the new lanes, crews will repave I-71/75 from Mt. Zion/KY 536 to north of the Turfway Road interchange.

November 2019 is the expected complete date for the northbound work, and southbound work is expected to begin in spring of 2020. Dates could be adjusted due to inclement weather or other unforeseen delays.

“The growth in Boone County is nearly off the charts, we want to make sure we provide the infrastructure to keep up with that growth so that drivers can get where they need to go safely,” said Bob Yeager, chief district engineer for the KYTC District 6. “As work begins on construction of the new merging lanes along a portion of I-71/75, a majority of the initial work will take place outside of the existing lanes of traffic, so we are pleased that this important work will not cause a significant disruption to traffic.”
