Kroger To Stop Selling “Pink Slime”

(Cincinnati, Oh.) - Kroger is one of dozens of supermarket chains that will no longer sell beef made with "pink slime."

Executives said Thursday that so-called "lean finely textured beef" is safe for consumption, but will no longer be sold because of customer concerns.

"We highly value customer feedback, and the recent flood of news stories has diminished their confidence in the product. As a result, Kroger will no longer purchase ground beef containing lean finely textured beef," the company said in a statement.

Pink slime is an ammonia-treated filler used in ground beef. Critics say the product could be unsafe and is a grotesque example of industrialized food production.

Shoppers wary of beef containing pink slime may still want to wait before buying. Kroger said while it won’t be ordering any more such meat, the supply already on store shelves will not be pulled.

Kroger joins Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and other grocery chains in ceasing the sale of pink slime.
