Kentucky To Offer New Driver's Licenses In 2019

The licenses will comply with the Real ID Act.

(Frankfort, Ky.) – Kentuckians will have new driver’s licenses to choose from in 2019.

Beginning in January, the State of Kentucky will offer a standard driver’s license or a voluntary travel ID. Standard licenses are good for driving, voting or applying for federal benefits, but a voluntary travel ID will be required to board domestic flight and to enter U.S. military bases after October 1, 2020.

The new driver’s licenses fall under compliance of the Real ID Act, which was passed in 2005 to improve security after the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, reports Local 12-WKRC.

Kentucky lawmakers passed a bill in 2017 to make the required changes, but Kentuckians won't be able to get updated driver's licenses until 2019. That's when local circuit clerk's offices will be able to get the necessary equipment.

Cost for the travel ID is $48, while the standard license will go for $43. Each license is good for eight years.

Kentucky is among the last states to comply with the Real ID Act.
