Jury Convicts Man Accused Of Animal Cruelty

(Dearborn County, Ind.) – A jury has convicted Joseph Stubbers III on three counts of Torturing or Mutilating an Animal.

Dearborn-Ohio County Prosecutor Lynn Deddens announced the conviction on Monday following a five-day trial in Dearborn Superior Court II.

Stubbers, 58, of Bright, was accused of hitting a dog in the head with a hammer and shooting the same dog with a handgun in July of 2019.

The jury heard testimony from a child neighbor who witnessed Stubbers hitting the dog with a hammer. Other witnesses saw Stubbers shoot the dog two times.

The dog, named Cooper, was rescued by Dearborn County Animal Control, and received care from local veterinarians.

Stubbers will be sentenced on Tuesday, September 7 at 1:00 p.m.
