District wide brush cutting operations will being in November along state routes.
(Southeastern Ind.) - INDOT maintenance crews will being brush cutting across the Southeast District starting next month.
This will include right-of-way mechanical brush cutting, removing trees, shrubs, and other vegetation along a number of state highways.
Brush cutting will remove an vegetation that blocks line-of-sight or traffic signs, reduce asphalt deterioration due to trapped moisture and provide shoulder space for motorists.
Typically, operations are on shoulders with little traffic. However, motorists should always use caution and watch for active crews throughout the district.
Routes with planned brush cutting will include U.S. 50, S.R. 46, U.S. 31, U.S. 421, S.R. 7, S.R. 3, S.R. 135, S.R. 446 and S.R. 250.
This work is usually done in the fall and winter months to prevent the disturbance of nesting birds and bats.
In the spring, herbicide treatment follows mechanical cutting to prevent regrowth and eliminate the need of future brush treatment.
These operations were focused on interstate routes last fall and this past spring.
Additional treatments could include manual brush cutting for larger limbs or trees, in addition to mowing and litter pick-up.
