INDIANAPOLIS – A controversial bill was signed into law on Wednesday.
Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb signed Senate Bill 480 banning gender-transition care for minors. The bill specifically bans prescriptions to minors for puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries for the purpose of attempting to change their sex.
The bill also prohibits physicians from aiding in a minor’s gender transition and subjects the physician to disciplinary action from the board regulating the physician.
By signing the bill into law, Indiana has become the 15th state to ban child sex changes in some capacity.
Following the announcement that the bill had been signed by Governor Holcomb, the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Indiana filed a lawsuit against the state on behalf of four transgender youth and their families.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court, alleges that Senate Bill 480 violates the U.S. Constitution on multiple fronts, including the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment.
