Ind. Unemployment Steady At 9% In Nov.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana’s labor force increased by 13,600 workers in November.

New data from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development shows the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was steady at 9.0 percent last month.

Over the past four months, Indiana’s workforce has grown by almost 50,000.

“We welcome the increase in the labor force,” said Mark W. Everson, Commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development. “The continued increase in Indiana’s labor force is in sharp contrast with our Midwestern neighbors and the nation as a whole.” Everson noted that Michigan’s workforce has decreased for eight straight months and Ohio’s for five of the last six months.

Private sector employment in Indiana increased by 1,700 in November.

Compared to neighboring Midwest states, Indiana had the second-lowest unemployment in November. Ohio’s jobless rate was 8.5 percent, followed by Kentucky at 9.4 percent, Michigan at 9.8, and Illinois at 10.0.

Locally, Dearborn County’s jobless rate fell below eight percent. Ohio County fell to 8.6. Ripley County was at 9.0 percent.

Switzerland County again had the region’s lowest unemployment at just 6.4 percent in November.
