(Versailles, Ind.) - Two lifesavers were recognized last week for their heroic actions.

The Versailles American Legion named Friendship Firefighters Gary Thomas and Brian Thomas as Firemen of the Year.

On October 7, 2024, at approximately 17:31, Friendship Volunteer Fire and Ripley County EMS were dispatched to County Road 900 South for a report of a 3-year-old male who had drowned. Thanks to the rapid response of units 717 and 730, who arrived on the scene in under four minutes, immediate resuscitation efforts were initiated.

The child, initially unresponsive and not breathing, began to regain color and a pulse due to their quick actions. He was transported to the Friendship Fire station by Ripley County EMS and flown via a medical helicopter to Cincinnati Children’s for further care and made a full recovery after a week in the hospital.

Gary Thomas and Brian Thomas both played pivotal roles in this rescue.

Gary has served 36 years of service and currently serving as President of the organization. Brian has eight years of service and currently serves as secretary.

"Their actions on that day are a testament to the importance and impact of the volunteer fire service. Congratulations to both for their efforts and well-deserved recognition," reads a statement from Friendship Volunteer Fire Department
