Franklin County Public Library District Announces Summer Reading, Writing Program

(Brookville, Ind.) - Color your world through reading. 

That is the theme of the Franklin County Public Library District's Summer Reading Program. 

The fun starts on June 19 at the Brookville Library from noon to 3:00 p.m. and continues on June 20 at the Laurel Library from noon to 3:00 p.m. Sign up for the Summer Reading Program, get a goodie bag and reading log, and enjoy messy art, including tie-dye, sand art and more. 

Attendees are asked to bring their own white (100% cotton) item for tie-dye art. 

Those who meet summer reading goals will have a chance to win prizes including tickets to the Cincinnati Zoo, Perfect North Slopes, and more. 

The Summer Reading Program is free and open to everyone of all ages. You do not have to live in Franklin County to participate.

In addition, budding storytellers ages 8-12 are invited to enter the Katherine Applegate Color Our World Writing Contest. Entries are open from June 1 to July 31. 

Entries should be short stories between 1,000 to 1,500 words about a character who takes an action that changes someone else's day for the better. 

The contest will be judged by the Collaborative Summer Library Program, Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group, and Katherine Applegate.

The grand prize winner will receive a virtual writing workshop with Katherine Applegate, signed copies of Willodeen, Crenshaw, Odder, and Wishtree, and will receive $500 worth of books for readers ages 8-12 from Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group.

Three runner-ups will receive a signed copy of Willodeen, Crenshaw, Odder, and Wishtree.

Turn your short story into Amanda Herbert at either Brookville or Laurel Library before July 31 and be entered to win a copy of Dogtown by Katherine Applegate from the Franklin County Public Library District, and with parent permission, we will submit your story to the official Color Our World Writing Contest.
