Former Rabbit Hash Mayor Lucy Lou Dies

Lucy Lou the border collie was the Ohio River town's unofficial mayor for eight years.

Former Rabbit Hash mayor Lucy Lou died on Monday, September 10, 2018.

(Rabbit Hash, Ky.) - Rabbit Hash is howling over the loss of a former mayor.

Lucy Lou was a border collie who was elected as the town’s unofficial mayor in a fundraising election by the Rabbit Hash Historical Society.

On Monday, pet owner Bobbi Kayser announced that Lucy Lou has died. She was 12-years-old in human years – or about 69 in dog years.

She was a good dog. At just age two, Lucy Lou was elected Rabbit Hash’s third mayor in 2008 in a race against 10 other dogs, a cat, an opossum and a jack ass. She served until 2016.

Her successor, mayor Brynneth Pawltrow, issued an official statement: "Today, the mayor before me, the reason I ran for office, crossed the rainbow bridge. May she watch over myself and Rabbit Hash as we continue through this hectic ride of life. Please join me in keeping her immediate family and all those she touched in your thoughts. I hope to make you proud, Lucy Lou. May you rest in peace."

Lucy Lou’s passing comes less than a year after Rabbit Hash lost another icon, Don Clare. The folksy character and preservationist died in October 2017, after many years on the Rabbit Hash Historical Society’s Board of Directors and serving as its president.
