Federal Grant Money Could Fund Continued Historic Homestead Survey At Versailles

Last year, Ball State University archaeologists uncovered 49 historic home sites in Versailles State Park. They are hoping to do conduct more surveying there.

(Versailles, Ind.) - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is seeking public input on upcoming projects, including one in southeastern Indiana.

Specifically, their Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology wants to get feedback about Hoosier sites that need to be preserved.

Among the 10 projects is a Ball State University survey of historic home sites in Versailles State Park. The survey site is approximately 80 acres.

A previous survey last year recorded 49 sites at the park. The next project will attempt to verify the placement of the remaining 21 locations.

The DHPA says information from the public will help them spend federal funds in a way that meets the needs of Indiana communities.

An online public survey is available through June 30. To comment or make a request to be a consulting party for any of the projects, send a request to Indiana DHPA, Attn: HPF Grant Staff, 402 W. Washington St., Room W274, Indianapolis, IN 46204, or mvanaman@dnr.IN.gov. Include which project or projects you are requesting information for, and DHPA will provide scope of work, maps, and photographs.
