INDIANAPOLIS – An election integrity bill has passed another major hurdle.

House Bill 1173 passed out of the House of Representatives this week.

The legislation would require Indiana voters to submit either their driver’s license number or the last four digits of their social security number when requesting an absentee ballot digitally.

Secretary of State Holli Sullivan says the proposal is her top priority this legislative session.

“I am thankful to Speaker Huston the Indiana House of Representatives for their partnership in passing my legislative initiatives that will further protect the Hoosiers’ votes and Indiana elections,” said Sullivan. ““My top priority this legislative session has been to make sure the security around our elections keeps up with evolving technology. This legislation will ensure voters continue to have confidence when casting their ballot.”

Indiana first offered the option to request an absentee ballot digitally in 2020.

Sullivan’s legislation also paves the way to deliver state-funded paper trail machines to Indiana counties by the next presidential election and provides cybersecurity protection for the statewide voter registration system and Indiana counties through 2028.
