Original story published Tuesday, September 25:

(Batesville, Ind.) - The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to close eastbound Interstate 74 exit and entry ramps at Batesville next Sunday night (SEPT 30) at midnight, weather permitting, for up to 15 days to facilitate construction of new concrete eastbound lanes.

Currently, eastbound I-74 thru-traffic is routed to a single lane on the north side of the interstate while the south side is being completely rebuilt.  Temporary pavement crossing I-74’s median and south-side lane area has maintained off- and on-ramp access to and from State Road 229 at Batesville/Exit 149.

Contracted crews skipped past this off-/on-ramp area while placing two lanes of concrete pavement on the south side of I-74 between Decatur County Road 850 East at New Point—through Franklin County—to State Road 101 in Ripley County.  It’s now time for that skipped south-side section at Batesville to be prepped and paved.

  • Existing asphalt pavement will be removed.
  • Concrete pavement for two eastbound lanes will be formed and poured.
  • Asphalt wedges will be installed as required for grade differences.
  • Pavement markings will be placed.

Milestone is the state’s prime contractor for this $61 million Next Level pavement replacement project.Construction of the 12.8-mile north-side section of I-74 westbound lanes will begin next spring after a winter hiatus.
