DNR Awards Grant to Help with Ohio Theatre Revitalization in Madison

The building was acquired by Friends of the Ohio Theatre in 2016.

(Madison, Ind.) – Every little bit of funding goes a long way toward the revitalization of a historic building in Madison.

The DNR Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology (DHPA) plans to award 15 federal Historic Preservation Fund grants totaling more than $575,000 for historic preservation and archaeology projects in Indiana communities.

Among the grant recipients is the City of Madison and the Friends of the Ohio Theatre. The DNR is granting $40,000 to help with the creation of construction plans and specifications for the rehabilitation of the Ohio Theatre.

Friends of the Ohio Theatre, Inc. acquired the historic building in March of 2016.

The theatre was damaged by a roof fire in June of 2018 but shows have since resumed.

The scope of the rehabilitation project includes field investigations of the theatre building, preparation of architectural designs for the interior, and preparation of specifications and construction documents.

The interior rehabilitation project is part of an estimated budget of about $4.4 million for the building.
