(Aurora, Ind.) - Dearborn County Recycling Center will host a Tire Amnesty Day on Wednesday, August 26, from 9:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m.

Dearborn County residents can recycle up to 20 tires for free. Residents are allowed to recycle more than 20 tires; however, fees apply after 20 tires. Dearborn County business are not eligible to participate in Tire Amnesty Day.

It is illegal to open dump or open burn waste tires in Indiana. Improperly stockpiled or illegally dumped tires can trap rainwater and become breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes and rodents. Tire piles that catch fire are difficult to extinguish, emit toxic gases into the air, and leave an oily residue that can pollute water and land.

Waste tires must be disposed of properly to prevent these problems. Tires that are recycled in Dearborn County are made into items such as truck sidewalls, tread for playgrounds, artificial turf, mud mats and rubber mulch.

Residents can recycle tires at the Dearborn County Recycling Center year-round for a fee. For a list of fees and other items accepted the Dearborn County Recycling Center, please visit DearbornCountyRecycles.com/drive-thru/.
