(Dearborn County, Ind.) - Dearborn County’s election officials want your thoughts on possible changes to the way voting is done in the county.

County Clerk of Courts Gayle Pennington and the Dearborn County Election Board have been crafting a plan for the use of vote centers in Dearborn County.

If a plan is adopted, it could require fewer poll workers and potentially lower election costs by opening fewer voting precincts in the county on election days. Voters would be allowed to vote at any of those precincts instead of being required to cast the ballot at a specific, assigned precinct near their home.

Thirty-seven other Indiana counties have adopted a vote centers model in some form. The only southeastern Indiana county to use vote centers is Switzerland County, which initiated its plan in 2012.

Now, Dearborn County wants to get citizens’ thoughts on voting centers being introduced here.

“The Dearborn County Clerk will be conducting town hall meetings to show the convenience of the new voting machines and discuss how vote centers will operate for Dearborn County,” says Pennington.

Four public town hall meetings will be held across Dearborn County next week:

  • Lawrenceburg Fire Department on Monday, December 3 at 7:00 p.m.
  • Dillsboro Civic Center on Tuesday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m.
  • Bright Lions Club on Thursday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m.

“The Election Board is hoping that by having the meetings throughout the County it will give people an opportunity to participate without having to travel too far,” said Pennington.
