City of Greendale Sees No Immediate Threat to Water Supply

A statement was issued this week regarding the recent chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio.

(Greendale, Ind.) – The Greendale Utility Department is reassuring their customers that the recent chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio is not expected to have any impact on municipal water supply.

City manager Derek Walker released a statement this week regarding the city’s water supply.

“Our water is not drawn from the Ohio River but an aquifer 80 feet below the surface. Recent evaluations have shown that a high-capacity collector well used by a local distillery dominates and defines the groundwater flow system in the aquifer that supplies our wells.”

Walker added that the groundwater modeling used to reflect the hydraulics of the stream-aquifer interaction along the river has shown there is a hydraulic barrier to potential contamination from the south.

While there is not immediate threat to Greendale’s water supply, the city is taking additional precautions out of an abundance of caution.

Precautions taken include additional testing for harmful chemicals, and monitoring testing results from Greater Cincinnati Water Works and Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission.
