Some beaches remain open.
(Brookville, Ind.) - According to Brookville Lake-Whitewater Memorial State Park Complex, the beach at Mounds SRA at Brookville Lake is closed to swimming because the weekly water test results exceeded E. Coli limits for the beach.
Beaches at Whitewater Memorial State Park and Brookville Lake's Quakertown SRA remain open for swimming.
E. coli are bacteria found in the environment, foods, and intestines of people and animals. Higher than normal levels happen occasionally as the result of sampling procedure, or as the result of an increase in nutrients in the water after a heavy rain.
Another sample goes to the lab as soon as test results show the need for a closure, and updates will be posted as soon as possible to announced when beaches will reopen.
"This is an uncommon occurrence at our beaches and is entirely different than the program that provides alert levels related to blue-green algae," reads a statement from Brookville Lake-Whitewater Memorial State Park Complex.
