An unvaccinated Boone County teenager who sued to be allowed to attend school is recovering from a bout with chickenpox.

(Walton, Ky.) – The northern Kentucky teen who sued his school after refusing to get a chickenpox vaccination now has that malady.

Despite an order from the Northern Kentucky Health Department, Jerome Kunkel refused to get vaccinated last March when there was an outbreak at his school, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Assumption Academy. Kunkle cited his religious beliefs in declining the vaccination.

Kunkle sued the health department in March. A Boone County judge upheld the ban against unvaccinated students.

His lawyer confirmed the 18-year-old now has chickenpox and hopes to be over it next week.

Kunkel and his family claim they have no regrets over their decision not to get vaccinated.
