(Florence, Ky.) - The White House has invited Boone County judge-executive Gary Moore to discuss the opioid epidemic.

Moore will represent the National Association of Counties at a September 28th gathering in the nation’s capital, reports The Enquirer

The Burlington native will join a small group of state health directors, city and county officials that will discuss best practices in combating the epidemic.

Last October, the Trump administration declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency. This week, September 16-22 is Prescription Opioid and Heroin Epidemic Awareness Week.

According to the Trump administration, drug overdoses are now the leading cause of deaths resulting from injury in the United States. In 2017, approximately 134 Americans died every day from an opioid overdose, and more than two million Americans suffered from addiction to prescription or illicit opioids.

Among the counties impacted is Boone County. Just last year, there were 44 drug overdose deaths in Boone County, which is down from 56 overdose deaths in 2016.
