House Bill 1010 has already passed the Indiana House of Representatives.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana lawmakers want to increase veteran benefits in the state with proposed tax exemptions.

State Representative Bob Cherry (R-Greenfield) says House Bill 1010 proposes a full income tax exemption for retired veteran pensions. The bill also proposes an increase for the property tax exemption cap for disabled vets.

“They are well-deserving of this. We would like to make them feel at home here in Indiana and being a Hoosier. It’s a way to help the veterans. They’ve helped us for their lifetime,” said Cherry, adding that Indiana lags behind the rest of the nation in veteran benefits.

About 30,000 Hoosier veterans and their surviving spouses would benefit from the bill if passed by the state Senate.

Cherry says tax breaks like this are important in interesting veterans to live and retire in Indiana.

HB 1010 passed the Indiana House of Representatives last month on a 95-3 vote. It is now under consideration in the state Senate.
