Bill To Limit Specialty License Plates Withdrawn

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana drivers won't have their choices capped when it comes to specialty license plates.

Senate Bill 327 would have changed the process for approving the plates and gotten rid of several new ones. Its author, Rep. Ed Soliday (R-Vincennes), pulled the legislation after various amendments were offered by members of both parties.

One of those plates approved by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles last year was by the Indiana Youth Group, an organization promoting tolerance of gay youth.

Soliday said the specialty plates are getting too political.

The proposal would have also required specialty license plates which don’t sell at least 1,000 in a calendar year to be discontinued.

Soliday said he will try the bill again next year.
