(Dearborn County, Ind.) – A Batesville man has been charged in Dearborn County after a fatal hit and skip accident in West Harrison.

Zachary D. Gober, 22, turned himself in this week on a warrant for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Death (Level 4 Felony) and Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death (Level 3 Felony).

The investigation began on November 1 when Dearborn County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Harrison Brookville Road near Whitewater Motors about a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle.

Deputies say the victim, Casey Webb, was struck by a passing pickup truck, which failed to stop and left the scene traveling northbound on Harrison Brookville Road at a high rate of speed.

During the investigation, officers learned that Gober had been at a nearby bar in West Harrison the night of the accident. Video footage from the bar showed Gober consuming alcohol and leaving the bar a short time before Webb was struck and killed.

Investigators retrieved more surveillance video from another business on Harrison Brookville Road that allegedly shows Gober’s pickup truck striking Webb before running off the roadway.

Gober was also allegedly involved in a property damage accident on the 600 block of Harrison Brookville Road following the hit and skip. Deputies say they observed tire tracks and vehicle parts in the yard.

Gober was booked into the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center on Monday. He is expected to make his initial appearance in Dearborn Superior Court II this morning.

Dearborn County Prosecutor Lynn Deddens released the following statement:

“I want to thank the Sheriff’s Department as well as Indiana State Police for their dedicated work investigating this case. My office will continue to work to ensure a just outcome in these tragic circumstances.”
