AUDIO: Milan Schools' Program Puts Emphasis On Turning Kids Into Leaders

The Leader in Me program was introduced at Milan Elementary School and Milan Middle School in 2017.

(Milan, Ind.) - Milan Community Schools' Leader In Me program is setting students on the path to success in the classroom and in life.

"The main purpose is to create leadership habits that will last a lifetime. A lot of listeners have heard about The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People. This is based on that book by Stephen Covey. It takes those habits and puts them in kid language so that kids can learn how to take care of themselves and to be leaders, not only in school, but in all areas in life," explains MCS Superintendent Jane Rogers.

Introduced at Milan in 2017, the Leader In Me program was focuses on kindergarten through 8th grade students in the school district.

Brenda Schwering is the school counselor at Milan Elementary School. She says the school not only teaches the habits, but is intentional in having students put those success skills to use.

"We have jobs at the school they can apply for and actually can do. For example, I have a team of girls that are our Monday morning leaders when we meet as an entire school every Monday morning and they help lead the skits that teach the habits for that week," says Schwering.

Rogers says completing the jobs gives students the confidence they need.
