(Bright, Ind.) - A judge has set a high bond for a man accused of forcing his way into the home of his girlfriend’s parents, then leading an 18-hour-long police standoff in Bright earlier this week.

Nicholas Gregory made his initial appearance in Dearborn County Superior Court I by video conference from the nearby county jail Thursday morning. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of Burglary with a Deadly Weapon (level 2 felony).

Judge Jonathan Cleary took the bond decision under advisement during the morning hearing, but by the end of the day he set Gregory’s bond at $1.5 million cash and $500,000 surety, according to court records. The judge cited the risk Gregory posed to the community, the seriousness of the allegations, and his criminal history.

Prosecutors indicated that further charges could be filed against Gregory in Franklin County for allegedly firing shots toward a goat and his girlfriend at a home on St. Peters Road Tuesday night. Following that episode in which he allegedly threatened to shoot his girlfriend and her mother, he followed them to the home on Banberry Drive in Bright later that night.

Gregory was also ordered to have no contact with his girlfriend, her parents, her sister, or any of the several children who were in the home which he broke a door to enter while armed with a gun.

A pretrial conference was scheduled for September 3 and a jury trial for January 13, 2020.

If convicted, Gregory, 37, of West Harrison, faces up to 30 years behind bars.
