INDIANAPOLIS - A recent survey shows that most high school baseball coaches throughout the state of Indiana support seeding the State Tournament.

The Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) recently surveyed its members about the long talked about subject.

Three questions were asked: 1) Do you support seeding the State Tournament? 2) If we were to seed, which method do you prefer to determine the seeds? 3) Do you support presented format that seeds into Geographical Quads, doubling the champions and balances each round?

Results show that a majority of the respondents are in favor of some sort of seeding. The IHSBCA had 291 of its 389 members participate in the survey, or 74.8 percent of members.

Of the 291, 72.9 percent support seeding the State Tournament with most of the respondents favoring a computer system to determine seeding over a vote by coaches.

Over 76 percent of respondents also support formatting the seeds into Geographical Quads.

If the proposed format were adopted, seeding would take place at the end of the season based on predetermined Geographical Quads in each of the four classifications. All teams would be seeded with the higher seed receiving an advantage if there is one to be had.

The IHSBCA is allowed to make proposals to the IHSAA every other year. The IHSBCA is currently interested in potential changes to the state tournament format, adding a week to the season calendar, safety issues and increased opportunities for play development.
