Mason Parris Beats #1-Ranked Opponent In His First Official Collegiate Match

The Lawrenceburg High School graduate and three-time state champ is now wrestling for the University of Michigan.

Freshman Mason Parris had an impressive debut match for the University of Michigan.

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Forget the redshirt. Lawrenceburg High School graduate Mason Parris is ready for high-level collegiate wrestling.

After winning three straight IHSAA wrestling state championships for Lawrenceburg, Parris is now a member of the University of Michigan wrestling team.

On Thursday, the 6th-ranked Wolverines traveled to Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. Parris, who had been redshirted for his freshman season up until now, made his college debut against nationally #1-ranked heavyweight Amar Dhesi, a two-time All-American.

Mason won the tilt in an 11-4 decision, helping the Wolverines team score a 33-8 win.

“I know I can compete with any guy in the nation. That just kind of was my mindset that I can beat anyone, I can compete with anyone, use my speed,” he told MGoBlue.com after the victory.

It’s not the pinfall he so commonly accomplished in high school – he pinned 34 of the 36 opponents he faced in his senior season at Lawrenceburg – but a very impressive result for his first collegiate match nonetheless.
