(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – With a winter storm impending, the National Weather Service has placed the tri-state under a Winter Weather Advisory.

The advisory will be in effect from 2:00 p.m. Thursday until noon Friday.

Rain showers will turn to snow showers Thursday afternoon as temperatures quickly fall below freezing. Winds will also gust up to 35 MPH.

Road surfaces are mostly above the freezing point, meaning that snow will melt upon landing, but could refreeze creating a layer of ice.

In preparation, the Indiana Department of Transportation Seymour District will have crews applying salt brine to interstates and state highways to minimize precipitation impacts, said INDOT spokesperson Greg Prince.

The Seymour District, which covers most of southeast Indiana, has 175 plows available to cover the 4,900 lane miles of road the state is responsible for. INDOT's Aurora subdistrict garage will have 29 trucks out on 12 shifts around the clock, Prince said.

INDOT reminds motorists to make commute preparations and use extra caution when hazardous road conditions occur.

INDOT also has these recommendations for driving near snow plows:

Distance:  Give snowplows room to work.  The plows are wide and can cross the centerline or shoulder.  Don’t tailgate and try not to pass.  If you must pass, take extreme caution and beware of the snow cloud.

Speed:  Snowplows travel below the posted speed limit.  Be patient.  Allow plenty of time to slow down.  Remember, Ice and Snow, Take it Slow.

Vision:  A snowplow operator’s field of vision is restricted.  You may see them, but they don’t always see you.  Keep your distance and watch for sudden stops or turns.
