(Indianapolis, Ind.) - A bill that could impact funding for the Dearborn County Recycling Center and other solid waste management districts is advancing through the Statehouse.
On Thursday, the Senate Appropriations Committee voted 7-6 to send Senate Bill 210 to the full Senate.
The bill includes provisions that would strip solid waste districts of their power to levy property taxes.
Dearborn County SWMD director Barbara Ault told Eagle 99.3 January 18 that if the bill becomes law it would force them to shut down, leaving the county without a solution for handling recyclables and hazardous materials.
“We are dependent on our property tax levy,” Ault said.
The legislation would also affect the Southeastern Indiana Solid Waste Management District, which organizes recycling programs for seven other counties in the region.
SB 210 also sets standards for how solid waste management districts educate the public about recycling.
