UPDATE: Icy Roads Mar Monday Commute

Update posted at 9:13 a.m.:

Monday morning's traffic nightmare appears to be clearing up.

An overnight snowfall put more than one-inch on the ground. As temperatures fell through the night, the melting snow refroze on roads across the Eagle 99.3 listening area.

That lead to treacherous conditions for unsuspecting motorists on Interstate 74 from Batesville to Harrison. The interstate was shut downstarting at about 6:00 a.m. and did not reopen until after 8:00 a.m.

Traffic was divereted off I-74. That led to backups on State Road 1 and 46, as well as U.S. 52 in northern Dearborn County.

The on-ramp from U.S. 50 to I-275 northbound in Greendale was closed for over an hour as multiple vehicles slid off the ramp. Among them was a pickup truck which had overturned and come to a rest on its side.

U.S. 50 about one mile west of Versailles was closed for more than two hours, but reopened about 8:30 a.m. A UPS truck and a semi collided head-on. Aircare was called to the scene to take one of the drivers to the hospital. Indiana State Police are investigating the crash.

As temperatures rose through the morning, the ice began to melt. At about 8:30, plow drivers said the surface temperature on the roads in Ripley County was between 33 and 35 degrees.

Franklin County initiated a Yellow (Level 1) travel emergency Monday morning. The school district there issued a two hour delay.

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Highway crews across the tri-state are scrambling to treat the roads after an overnight snowfall.

Countless accidents and slideoffs are being reported around the Eagle 99.3 listening area Monday morning.

The National Weather Service has extended a Winter Weather Advisory through 9:00 a.m. Monday for the entire tri-state. Little to no additional accumulations are expected, however, refreezing of melting snow will cause slick spots on roadways.

Some of the worst roads include Interstate 74 from Batesville to Harrison. The interstate is closed near the Indiana-Ohio state line with other closures near St. Leon. It is unknown when it may reopen.

The ramp from U.S. 50 to I-275 northbound in Greendale is closed due to several slide-offs which began at about 5:30. One vehicle involved in that accident had rolled onto its side.

U.S. 50 was closed about a mile west of Versailles for a reported head-on crash between a box truck and semi at about 6:30. Injuries were reported.

State Road 101, SR 46, and U.S. 50 also have slick spots throughout, according to various motorists.

The abundance of hazardous roads has caused several school delays. Find the list on Eagle 99.3’s closings and delays website.
