(Lawrenceburg, IN) - The Hemmings Motor News Great Race will be coming through Lawrenceburg Saturday, June 22. The racers will be staying overnight in Lawrenceburg that night until they depart the next morning to continue to their next leg of the race in Lancaster, OH.
The Great Race starts in Owensboro, KY and will end in Gardiner, ME. These races typically travel over 2,000 miles. Participants race vehicles that must be at least 45 years of age, including plenty of pre-World War II automobiles. The Great Race has been going on since 1983.
Teams typically consist of a driver and a navigator. The race is divided into multiple sections that each team must follow precisely. These teams will face a multitude of challenges from navigating the route, to weather, and even breakdowns.
The race is fair for all teams because it is not necessarily based upon speed. It is more about a team’s ability to arrive at different stages at the correct times. Penalties are given to teams for arriving early or late. The team with the lowest score at the end of the race is declared the winner.
The vehicles were not designed for interstate driving, so the intricate routes were designed to suit antique cars and their capabilities, in terms of speed, and durability. This allows for racers to experience American backroads and some great scenery.
They expect tens of thousands of spectators along their journey. The race is set to finish on Sunday, June 30. The grand champion wins $50,000 in prize money.
