Statewide Funding Cut Threatens Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program

Local nonprofit BSP Movements is seeking community support to keep the program thriving in Dearborn Co.

INDIANAPOLIS - Governor Mike Braun's new state budget proposal would eliminate Indiana's statewide funding match for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

This change puts the continuation of the early literacy program at risk in local counties and throughout the state.

Since September of 2023, Indiana's budget has provided financial support to match locally raised funds, ensuring the program's growth and sustainability. If the funding match is removed, the responsibility would then shift entirely to private fundraising and philanthropic efforts.

Governor Braun has asked First Lady Maureen Braun to lead these efforts, but that does not guarantee long-term support statewide.

“I have asked my gracious wife, First Lady Maureen Braun, to spearhead an initiative to keep Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in Indiana. She has agreed and she will work with philanthropic partners and in consultation with state leadership to identify funding opportunities for the book distribution program,” shared Gov. Mike Braun.

In Dearborn County, the program supports 1,150 children under the age of five. BSP Movements, the nonprofit organization that owns the Walnut Theater, recently became the local program partner to ensure the program's continued operation in the community. However, without state funding, community support will be needed.

BSP Movements is calling on businesses, organizations, and individuals to take action now and kindly donate to ensure this program continues for Dearborn County’s children. All locally-raised funds remain local. To contribute, visit https://givebutter.com/imaginationlibraryofdearborncounty

The mission of the Imagination Library of Indiana is to foster a love of reading among young learners by ensuring equitable access to free monthly books mailed directly to their homes from Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. By providing books every month at no cost to families, the Imagination Library increases childhood literacy rates, fosters a love of books, and promotes a culture of reading among all families in Indiana.

From Dolly: “The beauty of the Imagination Library is that it unites us all - regardless of politics - because every child deserves the chance to dream big and succeed.”
