Petition Started in Opposition of State Road 46 Plans in Batesville

A proposed project would reduce the number of travel lanes from four to two.

(Batesville, Ind.) - A petition has been started in opposition of plans to reduce lanes on State Road 46 in Batesville.

A public hearing took place last Monday at Batesville High School to allow attendees to view displays, talk with project personnel and provide public comment on the project.

According to INDOT, the project aims to enhance safety and minimize crashes along State Road 46 by reducing the number of travel lanes in each direction from four lanes to two lanes by converting the existing median to a two-way center turn lane, ultimately creating consistency and improving mobility along the corridor. The contract is currently scheduled to let to contractors in December 2025.

Oppositions believe the plan will bring significant disruptions by reducing the number of lanes, including traffic congestion, more accidents, increased travel times, and negative impact to local commerce.

The petition page states, "it is crucial to seek alternatives that will enhance road safety and efficiency without downsizing our essential infrastructure."

As of today, 785 people have signed the petition.
