(Harrison, Oh.) - Again this year, the Southwest Local School District is proud to partner with the Harrison Mayor’s Fund, This City His City, Christ’s Loving Hands, and JTM Food Group to provide for those in need in our community this holiday season.

Collection of items for the annual Food and Clothing Drive took place from December 7-11.  Donations were accepted at each SLSD building. The drive seeks to collect canned goods and other non-perishable food items for those less fortunate throughout the Southwest Local School District community. In addition, winter clothing items such as coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and boots are also accepted.

Over 27,000 food items have been donated by families throughout the school district, exceeding last year’s total of 24,000. In addition, several hundred articles of winter clothing have been collected as well. “This is our largest local community service project of the year,” said Mike Morris, SLSD’s Director of Communications. “Our community has always been great at rallying around our neighbors in need, and even during a pandemic, they’ve proven that this year will be no exception.”

More than 100 families pre-registered with the Harrison Mayor’s Fund to receive assistance. On Saturday, December 19, each family will receive 5 bags of groceries from the donated items, as well as a box of JTM products courtesy of JTM Food Group. They will also receive a bag of hand-picked toys for their children, and have the opportunity to browse the donated winter clothing items for anything they may need. The distribution will take place from 9:00-11:00 AM in the Harrison High School Gymnasium. The process will be completed outdoors in a “walk up and drive through” fashion to promote social distancing. All attendees are asked to wear a mask.

Excess food items will be donated to area food pantries that serve the residents of the Southwest Local School District. Extra clothing items will be donated to St. Vincent De Paul.
