(Indianapolis, Ind.) – Indiana lawmakers have proposed an amnesty period for homeowners and businesses to pay their taxes.
Senate Bill 523 cleared its first major hurdle on Monday when it unanimously passed through the Indiana Senate.
The bill would allow counties to adopt an ordinance to establish a property tax amnesty program for homeowners and businesses to pay overdue property taxes without penalty fees and interest.
In 2018, Indiana reported $345 million in delinquent property taxes and $175 million in late fees and interest owed.
Under SB 523, penalties and interest would be waived if overdue taxes are paid by May 2020.
The proposal now heads to the Indiana House for consideration.
