S-DIS Dismisses Student Until Hair Dye Goes

(Bright, Ind.) - A girl has been dismissed from Sunman-Dearborn Intermediate School until she can remove dye from her hair.

Charles Neeley, of Bright, told WCPO-TV his daughter Rachel was suspended by the school’s principal because there are remnants of blue dye in her hair.

The ten-year-old’s hair was dyed with Kool-Aid at a recent weekend sleepover.

Fifth grade teacher Cathy Sopcisak sent a letter home with the Rachel this week. S-DIS Principal Christina Vennemeier said Neeley’s dyed hair is a violation of the student handbook and must be taken out before she can return to school.

“Hairsprays and dyes other than a natural hair color are not permitted,” the student handbook posted on the schools website states. “Colored hair products or dyes other then natural colors, and make-up considered to be too extreme are not permitted.”

Wednesday was the first day Neely was not allowed to go to school.

The elder Neeley told the television station he has tried every safe method to remove the coloring, but nothing has worked.

He was going to visit with school officials on Wednesday to try and resolve the issue.
