Only Republicans Got To Vote On Sunman's New Town Council

The local Democratic party did not put forth a single candidate to challenge for the town board or clerk-treasurer.

(Sunman, Ind.) - Because the local Democratic party did not offer up a single candidate, Wednesday’s Republican convention became the de facto election for the Town of Sunman's public offices.

Four candidates submitted for the three available seats on Sunman Town Council, according to Ripley County Republican Party Chairwoman Ginger Bradford. Current councilman Don Foley was nominated by the GOP convention, as well as newcomers Marilyn Decker and Carol Eckstein.

Cheryl Taylor was selected over one other candidate to be Sunman’s next clerk-treasurer, Bradford added.

Although a small town convention can be conducted until August 21, the August 1 deadline for a candidate to declare for a small town convention has already passed, according to the Indiana Secretary of State's Election Division. Had there been any Democratic candidate offered by that party in either race, Sunman voters would have been given a choice on the November 2019 ballot.

So, with no Democrats, no fall election will be necessary to fill the town offices.

The four Republicans chosen at Wednesday's convention will take office on January 1, 2020. Terms are four years.
