(Walton, Ky.) – One person sustained fatal injuries in a single-vehicle crash on Tuesday morning in Boone County.
The crash took place around 6:02 a.m. on northbound Interstate 75 in Walton.
According to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, a 2016 Kia Soul, operated by Jose Mendez Celaya, 27, of Dry Ridge, was traveling in the left lane and appeared to lose control of the vehicle in heavy rain and struck the concrete median wall.
The impact caused the vehicle to overturn.
The right rear passenger, Jose Alejandro Cruz Zeledon, 47, of Dry Ridge, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. Lifesaving measures were attempted but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Celaya was transported to UC Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. One other passenger was uninjured.
The crash remains under investigation. Speed and alcohol/drug impairment do not appear to be factors in the collision.
