(Union, Ky.) - Boone County sheriff's deputies are charging a man accused of stabbing a teenager during a fight.

August Schroer, 18, of Union, was charged overnight with first-degree assault.

Detectives say Schroer stabbed the 15-year-old boy in the abdomen during a fight on Richmond Road in Union Tuesday evening. The stabbing victim suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The suspect allegedly gave sheriff’s deputies a full confession.

“Earlier this evening, Schroer was walking with friends on Richmond Road when the victim confronted him. The victim shoved Schroer, knocking him down to one knee. As Schroer stood up, he pulled out what is described as a pocket knife and told the victim to get back. Schroer stated that the victim came towards him with a raised fist. According to Schroer, as the victim moved closer, he stabbed the victim one (1) time in the abdomen. Schroer admitted that he did not see a weapon in the victim’s hand(s) and stabbed the victim out of fear of being punched,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

Following the stabbing, Schroer ran from the scene and called the Boone County dispatch center. He would later locate the ambulance that was staged in the area. He allegedly approached the ambulance still in possession of the knife and told EMS personnel that he was the person who stabbed the victim.

He then dropped the knife and remained there until deputies arrived.

Schroer is held at the Boone County Detention Center. A bond amount has not been set.

“This appears to be an isolated incident between the victim and Schroer. Neither one of them lived the area where the assault took place,” according to the sheriff’s office.
