(Rising Sun, Ind.) – The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office is warning area residents of a Publisher’s Clearinghouse scam.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a scammer posing as a Publisher’s Clearinghouse representative told an elderly victim that they were the recipient of a $3.5 million check.

In this instance, the victim did not give the caller any information.

“Please let elderly people know this is going on and it is a scam. Let them know it is ok to not answer their phone if they don’t know the phone number. It is also ok to hang up on the caller for these types of calls. So many times, people get victimized because they don’t want to be rude,” reads a statement from the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office.
