(Walton, Ky.) - Over 1,200 people have signed a petition calling for traffic light installation to improve safety at the intersection of U.S. 42 and Beaver Road in Walton.

The petition, started by local resident Clay Whaley, discusses the intersection's dangerous nature—citing over 24 accidents and multiple fatalities within five years.

Just last week, a fatal accident occurred at the intersection involving a dump truck that crashed into the Boonedocks Bar & Grill.

Petition signers believe a traffic light could prevent future incidents and provide a safer environment for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2017 there were over 7,000 accidents at intersections without traffic signals, leading to the loss of countless innocent lives. We need to treat this not as mere numbers but as actual lives lost and countless others affected negatively.

Installing traffic lights has been proven to reduce fatal accidents by up to 29 percent, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

"As a community, we need to prioritize our safety and wellbeing over anything else. Therefore, we urge our local government and traffic management authorities to take immediate action. It's high time we prevent any more families from going through the unimaginable pain that comes from losing a loved one. These losses are preventable, and enforcing traffic safety measures is a critical step in the right direction," reads an excerpt from the petition website.
