(Indianapolis, Ind.) -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching a new campaign ahead of Labor Day Weekend to combat driving under the influence.
Deputy Administrator Heidi King says driving while impaired by drugs is becoming more common on roadways across Indiana and the nation.
"Every year we focus on alcohol-impaired driving this time of year, but this year we are enhancing that campaign to alert drivers that if they are driving and impaired by drugs, they should no drive," says King.
The slogan goes: "If you feel different, you drive different. Drive high, get a DUI."
NHTSA says in the year 2016, there were over 800 traffic fatalities in Indiana and 26 percent of them involved a driver with a blood alcohol content of point-eight or higher.
King encourages everyone to plan ahead, especially when celebrating the Labor Day weekend. Designate a sober driver, use public transportation, or call a ride-sharing service or cab to make sure you get home safely.
